Georgia is a transcontinental country in the Caucasus region, partly in Eastern Europe and partly in Southwestern Asia. The region of Georgia covers 69,700 km² and is influenced by a temperate cyclic climate. Georgia’s population excluding Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region is 4.4 million, nearly 84% of whom are ethnic Georgians. Georgia is edged to the north by the Russian Federation, to the east by Azerbaijan, to the west by the Black Sea, to the south by Armenia and to the southwest by Turkey.

Georgia is a representative democracy, organized as a secular, unitary, presidential republic. The province of modern-day Georgia has been constantly populated since the early Stone Age. Christianity was announced the state religion as early as AD 337 proving a great incentive to literature, arts and the unification of the country. In Greek Mythology, Colchis was the location of the Golden Fleece sought by Jason and the Argonauts in Apollonius Rhodius' epic tale Argonautica. The Georgian Kingdom reached its zenith in the 12th to early 13th centuries. The rulers of regions which remained partly autonomous organized rebellions on various occasions. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Georgia declared independence on May 26, 1918 in the midst of the Russian Civil War. On April 9, 1991, shortly before the collapse of the USSR, Georgia declared independence.

Georgia has a 723 km general boundary in the north with Russia's Northern Caucasus middle district. Georgia too shares boundaries with Azerbaijan (322 km) to the south-east, Turkey (252 km.) to the south-west, and Armenia (164 km.) to the south.
